Dodgers: Max Scherzer Expected to Sign Soon With 4 Teams in the Mix
The Dodgers are going to have some competition to sign Max Scherzer. And why not? Even at age 37, he is still one of the top starting pitchers in the game. Scherzer came over to Los Angeles at the deadline and absolutely dominated. That should absolutely help him secure a big contract to wrap up an illustrious career.
The latest report suggests that Scherzer is very close to making a decision and signing with a team. The Dodgers are among the teams in the mix, but the Giants, Angels, and Mets are also in the mix to sign the hurler.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi also confirmed that Scherzer was talking to the Dodgers and the Angels in his free agency. The biggest question seems to be whether or not Scherzer will sign before the December 1st Collective Bargaining expiration. Jon Heyman confirmed that the expectation was that he would sign before that deadline.
If that’s accurate, that means that Scherzer could be signing with a team by this Wednesday. That’s a big change from years past when big-name free agents would often wait out teams to make decisions and sign big contracts closer to Spring Training. If he does end up choosing the Dodgers, that would really help them cement their rotation before the CBA situation gets worse.
For the moment, there has not been a lot of hope that a new CBA will be agreed upon quickly. That could mean that baseball is headed for a lockout and potentially a delayed start to the 2022 season. But the 2 sides will be hard at work to prevent that, especially after baseball lost so much money during the 2020 season.
