Dodgers: Los Angeles Has Shown Interest in LHP Steven Matz

With Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer hitting free agency this season, Dustin May out until at least next August as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, and Trevor Bauer’s future with the team up in the air, the Dodgers have holes to fill in the starting rotation. Walker Buehler and Julio Urías are the only sure locks as of right now.

The Dodgers have already shown they’re ready to dip into the starting pitching market with the signing of LHP Andrew Heaney. One can never have too much pitching and the Dodgers learned that the hard way this past season. Heaney was just the start as the Dodgers were said to be among the teams interested in LHP Steven Matz.

According to Mets beat writer Tim Healey, Matz meant with interested teams during the recent GM meetings. The Red Sox, Angels, and Cardinals were among the teams besides the Dodgers that have shown interest in the 30-year-old southpaw.

Matz who spent this past season with the Toronto Blue Jays after parts of 6 seasons with the New York Mets, posted a 14-7 record with a 3.82 ERA in 29 starts. It was his best season on the mound since 2016. The biggest knock against Matz is his inability to stay healthy and post consistent numbers year in and year out.

The Dodgers have been a great home for pitchers seeking to reinvent themselves. It would also offer Matz a stay in a winning environment and one that would be able to utilize him in a way that can help him succeed. Such a pairing would make sense for the Dodgers in the event that they can’t re-sign one of or both Kershaw and Scherzer.
