Rolly Romero’s trainer says Shakur and Haney are playing it safe

By Dan Ambrose: Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero’s coach Bullet Cromwell says he sees Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney as examples of fighters that have been playing it safe with their careers.

Bullett feels that Rolly and Canelo Alvarez are fighters that aren’t protecting their careers.

He states that Rolly (14-1, 12 KOs) recently challenged for a world title against WBA ‘regular’ lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis in his fifteenth fight.

In Rolly’s case, he paid the price by stepping it up against Tank by getting stopped in the sixth round.

Bullett also was impressed by how Canelo took the risky fight with WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol with the intent to please his fans.

“When you’ve got somebody fighting you like Teofimo Lopez or Rolly, it’s not easy. Pressure bursts pipes,” said Rolly’s trainer Bullet Cromwell to Fight Hub TV.  “We know he [Ryan Garcia] was going to beat Fortuna. We know he was going to beat Campbell.

“I want to see these guys fight people where the world doesn’t know they’re going to win. Like when Teofimo went against Loma. A two-time gold medalist. He went over there and jumped out the gym to slam dunk and take the belts.

“That’s what you want to see in boxing. Rolly vs. Tank. A guy with 15 fights [Rolly] fighting a three-division world champion with 26 fights with no losses.

“Canelo jumping out of the gym to go fight Bivol to please the people. That’s the people in boxing that make the sport what it is. Not the guys that are playing it safe, protecting their O.

“They want to be Pretty Boy Floyd. They can never be Floyd. Floyd is a whole another element. There will never be another Floyd.

“I got Shakur playing it safe. Who has he fought? Nobody. Devin Haney, the Kambosos rematch. Really? Why are you moving back in that direction for? You beat him in his backyard unanimously.

“If it was a split decision, that’s different. Devin is going to do the same thing to him. Maybe even worse. Devin may throw a hard body shot and finish him.

“If Kambosos can’t change in a few months, which a lot of people can’t, we know that Devin is going to dominate. He’s played it safe too,” said Bullet.
